About Recadio

Recadio was born out of frustration with the way macOS handles audio devices by default. If you're here, you've probably experienced this yourself. Every time you connect a bluetooth device, macOS auto-switches to it, both input and output.

That causes the audio quality to drop significantly. I wrote a deep dive about why that happens on Why is Bluetooth Sound Quality Bad on My Mac, but the main takeaway is that you should avoid using the mic and speakers of a bluetooth device at the same time.

It's quite simple to do it manually, but very annoying – at least for me. I couldn't find a simple way to automate it. Existing solutions just forced the MacBook mic, but I wanted to use my external mic if it was connected. It sounds reasonable, right?

And so, Recadio was born. It's very simple, it stays out of the way, and I believe it should the default macOS behavior. I originally published it in October 2023, and I've been improving it ever since with the feedback from the users, and I plan to continue doing so, as I'm a user myself.

Fun facts:

  • The name Recadio comes from "Remember choice of audio input/output", which all together makes Recadio
  • The logo is an alien head made with the shape of headphones

About me

Me

I'm Daniel, a software developer, and the creator of Recadio. I've been freelancing since 2019, and I also build side projects like this one. I've previously worked at Toast and Gumroad.

Recadio is the first side project that I made on my own and sold online. I initially built it for myself, but I realized it could be useful for others, so I decided to sell it. I'm very happy I did because one thing is to build software and another is to sell it.

I'm actively working on new side projects like this, and improving Recadio when ask for new features.
